What’s All This Talk about SEO

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

If you are just now hearing about SEO (Search Engine Optimization) then you are way behind the curve. If fact, SEO has been around since the internet was born; you just didn’t know about it. The biggest thing for so long was all about building a website. A graphic designer friend recently said, “I used to go into a networking arena and be surrounded by everyone that needed a website built. Today, people are looking for ways to drive traffic so if you say SEO, SEM or any other type of SE help, they salivate”.

Just like the mantra “build a website and they will come” is far from the truth, SEO alone will not make you the most popular website on the net. Yes, you may get traffic but you will need to ask yourself if you are getting the right kind of traffic, is it targeted traffic and is it traffic that can convert. Most SEO companies (not all) are still focused on getting you keywords to do with what you may. Make sure you take the time to find out if the SEO Company you are considering takes it to the next level and does more than just keyword research.

Am I addicted to Facebook?

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

Like millions of people from all over the world, I’ve become an avid user of Facebook. Many of my younger friends and co-workers are horrified that people their parent’s age have embraced the social networking phenomenon. I think they should give us a break. Having the ability to get in touch with old friends, network with other media professionals and banter with close buddies has enriched my life immeasurably. I am now in contact with a long lost friend from middle school. I talk to my sister, who lives in Europe, almost daily. My nieces and nephews send me pictures of their adventures. I check in with my favorite professor from college.

There is an addictive side to Facebook. When are you using it too much? I recently saw a CNN report about this very subject. The psychologist interviewed said anything over two hours a day is excessive. If you are losing sleep over it or ignoring your spouse or children, you’ve slipped into actual addiction. Although I haven’t lost any sleep, I do find it very hard to disengage from the site once I’m logged on. I’d say I’m borderline addicted at this point. I wonder if the sense of connectedness opens up something in the brain similar to a drug. They probably don’t call it “Crackbook” for nothing.
