Addicted to Everything
Wednesday, June 9th, 2010Okay, this may not be what you want to hear but I am convinced that you can excuse all behaviors to addictions. The latest card that has been played is the “sex addiction” one with the likes of Tiger Woods and Jessie James. Sex seems to get a lot of attention but there are many other addictions that I hear about that don’t get the big media hype. One my brother in law uses is the “sugar addiction” and the “fast food addiction” to deflect anyone trying to talk to him about his 458 pound frame.
A friend of my wife’s is addicted to “bad men”. She’s also addicted to Oprah but Oprah doesn’t get the talk time or attention like the bad men do. Then there is the TV and Internet addictions and the addiction to exercise, pot, booze, work and more. It’s just getting to the point that I can go out and do anything and then say, “Oh, I’m addicted”.
I feel this is bad for all of us because it really does diminish real addictions and turns them into lame excuses. It’s hard to see or to know the difference and makes it easier for all of us to dismiss real issues. When one cannot take responsibility and see truth in a problem then addiction might be the problem. Everything else is just an excuse for really bad behavior.
Really Enjoying Your Kids
Monday, November 30th, 2009What do you do when your children’s interest are no where near yours? A friend of mine has come up with a great idea in order to interact with his son who has nothing in common with him and he calls it “fun time”. This time could be anything his son wants to do from exploring bugs in the yard to watching a show or movie, reading a book on Egyptian pyramids to cooking something together. The idea is not to make anything happen but to just have fun. Since his boy is six years old and he wants to have a great relationship with him my friend decided that together trumps what you’re doing.
This is kind of a reversal from the “old school” thinking where you had to do whatever your parents were doing in order to spend time with them. What my buddy has discovered after several years of doing what his son likes that now his boy is asking him what he likes to do and they are starting to do some additional things like go to a football game and camping. What you see when you are with these guys is the love they have for each other and how much fun and joy they get from just hanging out. It’s a great way to have fun with kids.
Don’t Forget to Have Fun!
Friday, November 20th, 2009There are so many people walking around in a daze and looking like they are going to explode at any minute. The stress is all over their face and some even walk bent over like the hunchback of Notre Dame with back and neck pain galore. Very few adults I know over the age of forty are having fun and this is a national problem.
Yes, I know we are stressed and the economy is not what it was a couple of years ago and I know there are some of us who are out of work and really struggling. However, I also know that laughter lifts us out of the doldrums and ruts we find ourselves in and makes life more tolerable and just a little bit easier. The lack of fun and play has ripped the life right out of so many of us that we need to pay attention and get it back. If that means getting on the floor and playing with the dog or sliding down a slide with your kids or your spouse if you don’t have kids then do it. Get out and breathe in the fresh air and laugh out loud for real and not in a text message. You and the people around you will be glad you did.
Need Help Writing a Resume?
Monday, October 19th, 2009Are you one of the millions who are out looking for a job? That’s right, one of the millions of displaced workers in the current job market today competing with each other. The latest statistic is for every one job opening there are six people available to fill the job immediately. So how do you become the one they pick?
The first thing most employers will see is your resume along with hundreds, if not thousands of other resumes. The person in charge is normally not the first person that sees this piece of paper; it’s one of the people in human resources that has the job of sorting the resumes for the jobs as they come in. So the first thing you have to do is make it through the sort. More and more companies are also going to applicant tracking systems and you will need to have a resume that gets through these as well. Getting help with resumes is one thing, getting the correct help writing your resume is another. Take your time and make sure the help you are getting is coming from someone who has been on the other side. It could be the difference in you being chosen for the next job or not!
The Only Time I Skipped Class
Tuesday, August 18th, 2009I really was a goodie two shoes before hitting college. Who has perfect attendance from kindergarten to senior year, yes, me and my twin. I also never ditched a class…. well up until senior year. Why? To run a class errand. I was the class Historian and needed to pick up developed slides for the end of the year slide show. You would think such an honorable mission in the school spirit that nothing could go wrong, right?
Not in my life. I knew something was off. I took my car out of the lot with my 2 accomplices that were just looking for a ride somewhere not in school. Driving on the Beltway I was changing lanes and of course the car in my blind spot was also changing lanes into mine so that was close call #1. After the pick up, out of the shop, another near side swipe, close call #2. Three blocks from school, I had right of way on the major road and woman on a side street hesitates, goes and then hesitates again in the middle of my lane. She had so much time to make it. I slammed on the brakes skidding 20 feet and totaling her car. She got sited and my school security guard came and dealt with the cops for me. So much for my one skipped class!
Loosing Weight the Slow Way
Monday, June 1st, 2009I wasn’t able to lose weight until I learned about two things – patience and nutrition. I had to give up my idea that weight loss needed to be fast and painful. It hasn’t been easy because I’ve been yo-yo dieting my whole life. I’d either go on a meager diet and starve myself to the point of insanity or allow myself just about anything. It all caught up with me when I got an ultra-stressful job. The stress eating associated with this unhealthy job caused a 70 pound weight gain. I was in trouble, and no amount of yo-yo dieting was going to help me now.
After reading material from nutritionists, psychologists and health experts, I decided to change my habits over the period of a year. I designed my own plan with the help of an online support group. I’m two months into the plan and have lost about 10 pounds. I have to fight the urge to starve myself because I’d like to get all this weight off immediately. But deep down I know that’s not going to work. My diet consists mostly of foods high in phytonutrients. Instead of filling up on comfort food, I eat plenty of fresh berries and vegetables. I’ve eliminated sugar and white flour completely and feel that finally, I am on my way.
