Comics Aren’t Real

Friday, April 16th, 2010

There have been plenty of movies made that are based on a comic book series.  They are usually filled with plenty of action and some cool special affects. On the other hand, they are not always good. A lot of the time the movie makers will change some parts in the original plot in order to make it easier to understand or better translated to the big screen. Sometimes these changes blend nicely. A lot of the time however this results in the story having very big plot holes. In my opinion, this is because the comics that the movies are made from are not based in reality. So they cannot really be put on the same level.

The comics themselves make no attempts at trying to be realistic but most of the time the film adaptations are made to be more realistic. More often than not this only makes the movie even less realistic. I think that the people making these movies should just accept that the story is totally not real. This will make the movies that much easier to enjoy.

“The Proposal”

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

It’s my wife’s birthday and just like so many other birthday wishes, the movie of her choice always comes up. This year the ask was to be taken to see The Proposal staring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds. Though I’m okay with romantic comedies I do get a little tired of knowing how they will always end. Every once in a while there’s a twist or two but not here. That alone would normally make me yawn but I have to say, this movie made me laugh.

I loved the relationship and verbal assault between the two main characters in the film and Betty White was fantastic and sharp as ever. Though I wouldn’t go overboard and say the movie was a five star show, I would say it got a good three and a half and I would see it again. That’s saying a lot more than I could say about most of the romantic comedies I see these days. I wish more film makers would pay better attention to the way the characters develop and interact.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine – Review

Friday, May 8th, 2009

My wife and I went and saw two movies last week and “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” was one of them.  The other was a romantic comedy otherwise known as a “chick flick” but for some reason my wife was very excited about seeing the Wolverine movie and it didn’t take me long to figure out why; Hugh Jackman.  While you might think that I’m not too keen about that, the truth is it is great with me because I got to see the movie without any groans or grievances from my wife.  I love the fact that action movies are being made that attracts both men AND women; and this is an action packed movie!

From the opening sequence throughout the end of the film you felt the tension between the two brothers.  It is this tension along with the natural inclination to seek revenge that moves this movie along.  Not one time did I get bored or tired of the plot, which is what normally happens to me with these types of films.  I would have to give “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” a 4.5 stars out of a possible 5.  Jackman was superb in the lead, as well as naked, and the supporting characters did a great job as well.  I can’t wait to see the next addition to the X-Men story.
