Pro-Choice & Christian: a Paradox?

Friday, February 5th, 2010

The abortion issue is as hotly debated as ever. In the Christian community, most seem to lie in the Pro-Life camp. However, is it at all paradoxical to be Pro-Choice and a Christian?

I guess that depends on your views of the Bible. Jesus taught love, acceptance and forgiveness. You’re not seeing that with today’s church. I think many in the Church are blind to the multiple layers that make up this issue. Yes, it is wrong to terminate life arbitrarily. But, is it also wrong to save a mother’s life at the expense of the baby’s? Is it wrong to abort a child conceived from abuse or rape? These are questions that must be honestly discussed.

Another issue is free will. God gave it to man for a reason. Man is free to make good choices as well as bad ones. God also gives forgiveness to those that make bad choices. Having a legalized and regulated abortion industry ensures that women who make that choice will still be alive to seek forgiveness.

Man’s great problems are not solved by dogma and intolerance. Christ taught the world to love and accept others. Agreement on tough issues is not even in the equation. There should be no paradox in being Pro-Choice and Christian.

Christmas Brings Out Your Strengths and Weaknesses

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

One of the things I have realized over the years is I have no business trying to decorate anything at Christmas. That is not to say that I haven’t tried over the years because I have given it my all on several occasions. I have done my best to make sure the tree looks decent before my wife sent me outside to hang the lights on the trees outside while she “fixed” the inside tree. She then came outside and had me take the lights down and follow her instructions, which I do because I know my limitations. But when it comes to the cooking; she knows who’s who.

So now we have been together long enough to know what our strengths and weaknesses are so we have Christmas down to a well oiled science and it works very well. I do all the cooking and she does all the decorating. We hire a cleaning lady to come in before we get started to do those deep cleaning chores and it all works to the advantage of our guests. No one is exhausted and we are able to put our best foot forward.

Pumpkin Love

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

Every year I have a seasonal love affair, with pumpkin. There’s something about cooler temperatures and leaves changing color that inspires me to re-immerse myself in that love. As soon as the first spots of color appear in some of the trees, I start filling cupboards with cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, ginger, walnuts, condensed milk and canned pumpkin. I continue a tradition with my daughters that was started by my mother when I was a little girl, that being ushering in Autumn, with the reading aloud a book about an obstinate but warm hearted old witch who wins a baking contest with a wonderful concoction called Magic Nut Cake. The recipe is printed on the back of the book so immediately following the reading of the book; I bake Magic Nut Cake and let me tell you, I have been wowing potlucks, parties, and houseguests with said cake for years.

Pumpkin is wonderfully versatile working nicely in; bisque, chili, corn bread, sweet bread, soufflé, pie, cake, cookies, donuts, fritters, pan cakes, muffins , ice cream and of course baked seeds. From mid September until the mid November my house smells like pumpkin and spices from the combination of goodies stewing or baking and diffuser oils. Stop by and enjoy the best season of all with me and my pumpkin colored cat.

The Creation Myths

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

There are many different myths and religious beliefs associated with the creation of the universe. Some view it as one huge cosmic event. Others depict creation as a series of events that happened in stages. No matter what the myth, the original woman and man are always seen as central symbols of primordial humanity. Australian Aboriginal stories, which are more than 150,000 years old, attribute creation to their ancestors living in the mythical space and time known as “The Dreaming.” These dreaming beings lived a lot like their human counterparts – traveling, hunting, loving and fighting. In sleep the ancestors dreamed the events of the next day. They believed that every being shared a fundamental connection with the source of creation.

The Maori and other Polynesians believed the universe originally consisted of an eternal night. Eventually, Rangi, the sky father, and Papa, the earth mother became a couple. Their coupling created the land and many divine offspring. They lived in the darkness until the parents decided to split apart. In the Sumerian mythology Enki, the fun-loving god of wisdom, molded the first humans out of clay from a river bed. The book of Genesis describes God as single-handedly creating the universe in seven days. He completed his work on the sixth day with his creation of humans and rested on the seventh. In the Biblical account, Adam is created from the dust of the earth by Yaweh, the creator God. Yahweh then gives him a companion female, the mother of all humanity.
