Pumpkin Love
Every year I have a seasonal love affair, with pumpkin. There’s something about cooler temperatures and leaves changing color that inspires me to re-immerse myself in that love. As soon as the first spots of color appear in some of the trees, I start filling cupboards with cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, ginger, walnuts, condensed milk and canned pumpkin. I continue a tradition with my daughters that was started by my mother when I was a little girl, that being ushering in Autumn, with the reading aloud a book about an obstinate but warm hearted old witch who wins a baking contest with a wonderful concoction called Magic Nut Cake. The recipe is printed on the back of the book so immediately following the reading of the book; I bake Magic Nut Cake and let me tell you, I have been wowing potlucks, parties, and houseguests with said cake for years.
Pumpkin is wonderfully versatile working nicely in; bisque, chili, corn bread, sweet bread, soufflé, pie, cake, cookies, donuts, fritters, pan cakes, muffins , ice cream and of course baked seeds. From mid September until the mid November my house smells like pumpkin and spices from the combination of goodies stewing or baking and diffuser oils. Stop by and enjoy the best season of all with me and my pumpkin colored cat.
