Rock n Roll

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

Rock has been a popular form of music and entertainment for decades. It is popular in America and in plenty of other countries all around the world. World famous bands like Led Zeppelin and AC/DC have been known to do worldwide showings that have sold out at every single showing. And those are just two examples. There are plenty more bands who produced tons of great music in their day.

Still all great things must come to an end and Rock is no exception. Other forms of music, such as techno and hip-hop, have taken the top spot as the party music. In my opinion, the biggest reason for this is the amount of crappy, pop rock that has been produced in recent years. This music lacked the hardcore feel that could be found in other forms of music.

So just like any popular trend Rock has had it’s time. The stuff that was made in the past was good and still is. But because the new stuff is so lame, people have probably lost interest.

Comics Aren’t Real

Friday, April 16th, 2010

There have been plenty of movies made that are based on a comic book series.  They are usually filled with plenty of action and some cool special affects. On the other hand, they are not always good. A lot of the time the movie makers will change some parts in the original plot in order to make it easier to understand or better translated to the big screen. Sometimes these changes blend nicely. A lot of the time however this results in the story having very big plot holes. In my opinion, this is because the comics that the movies are made from are not based in reality. So they cannot really be put on the same level.

The comics themselves make no attempts at trying to be realistic but most of the time the film adaptations are made to be more realistic. More often than not this only makes the movie even less realistic. I think that the people making these movies should just accept that the story is totally not real. This will make the movies that much easier to enjoy.

R&B Lineage

Friday, March 19th, 2010

I love R&B. I love the soul of the artist and the voice of the singer. I can link R&B to other very similar but older musical styles and I think there is a very strong connection. I think that the newer music evolved from the older styles.

I like blues music as well. The emotion that the artist had was beautiful. I also love soul. I believe that somewhere along the way blues evolved into soul. The music sounds pretty similar. The songs also all have very similar themes. Some blues songs might even be considered soul and vice versa. From there I think that some how soul evolved into R&B. This music is even more similar to soul than blues was. R&B was usually a little slower but for the most part the themes for these types of music were almost totally identical.

These three types of music are some of my favorites and they all bear very similar features and traits. They all have very groovy sounds and they all have some pretty sad and melancholy themes. They are not all sad. A lot of them are very upbeat in fact. But one thing is for sure. They are all from the same lineage.

Country Music Capital

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

I was born and raised in Nashville. I have never been a real big fan of country music, but on the other hand, I am a huge fan of live music. I don’t really care what kind of music is being played I just love to watch the musicians do their thing. My favorite part is watching them jam. I love it when they really get it going. In my opinion, it’s not about what kind of music and the most important part of the live show is how to musicians get the crowds revved up and just entertain. If the guys can really show off and make the music fun and enjoyable to watch then I admire that guy and respect his music and it is truly enjoyable.

I have been to plenty of live shows and I consider myself very lucky to live in Nashville and have to opportunity to see so much great live music. Even though country music may not be my favorite, it can be very entertaining and that’s really what it’s all about.

Before You Can Walk a Tightrope…..

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

My cousin is a trapeze walker and after having a discussion with him, I learned that to walk on a type rope is a lot harder than it looks. And the worst part is that it looks really hard. They fall so much that the first thing they have to learn is the right way to fall. After I had put some thought into that it made a lot more sense.

If a tightrope walker were to fall and were inexperienced at falling he would not know how to move his body to take the least amount of damage. Not only that, but he may just simply panic. He could land in a way that he could never walk again; or worse.

So I guess the moral of the story is that tightrope walking is no walk in the park. It’s more like a walk across a thin rope that is suspended in the air. Just remember that next time you’re at the circus enjoying the show. It may be even more enjoyable knowing how difficult it is to walk a tightrope!

Pumpkin Love

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

Every year I have a seasonal love affair, with pumpkin. There’s something about cooler temperatures and leaves changing color that inspires me to re-immerse myself in that love. As soon as the first spots of color appear in some of the trees, I start filling cupboards with cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, ginger, walnuts, condensed milk and canned pumpkin. I continue a tradition with my daughters that was started by my mother when I was a little girl, that being ushering in Autumn, with the reading aloud a book about an obstinate but warm hearted old witch who wins a baking contest with a wonderful concoction called Magic Nut Cake. The recipe is printed on the back of the book so immediately following the reading of the book; I bake Magic Nut Cake and let me tell you, I have been wowing potlucks, parties, and houseguests with said cake for years.

Pumpkin is wonderfully versatile working nicely in; bisque, chili, corn bread, sweet bread, soufflé, pie, cake, cookies, donuts, fritters, pan cakes, muffins , ice cream and of course baked seeds. From mid September until the mid November my house smells like pumpkin and spices from the combination of goodies stewing or baking and diffuser oils. Stop by and enjoy the best season of all with me and my pumpkin colored cat.

Exploration Through Books

Friday, August 21st, 2009

Whether you love novels, biographies, self-help or any other genre of books, reading is one of the best ways to discover the world. The Zane Grey books were the ones my mother talked about, as I was growing up, that she had read as a young girl and it put inside her the desire to see the beautiful Southwest and eventually the world. I know she was a bit disappointed in me and my brother because we were not huge readers growing up like she was. We were both into sports like our father. However, both of us have become avid readers as adults.

Through books I have discovered a fascination for both quantum physics and history that I would have never known had I not started reading. Books allow you to explore the deep oceans of the past, present and future; the galaxy; the internal workings of our minds and bodies and how that affects us throughout our lifetime; and many such things that we could never do in our day to day lives. Through books I have become a better father and grandfather, a better communicator for my work and a good thinker and researcher. I now cannot imagine my world without the ability to read or listen to books. If you haven’t read a book lately, visit your local library and pick one out today.
